- US economy lost fewer than expected jobs with 539,000 in April showing signs that the rate of layoffs are improving.
- Economist were expecting a much worst number of 600,000.
- Unemployment is now at its worst in 1983
"You can make the case that the panic layoffs that we saw at the turn of the year are starting to ease." – Chris Rupkey
- Construction -110,000
- Factories -149,000
- Retailers –47,000
- Financials –40,000
These numbers came better than consensus estimates but did not come much as a surprise as data from the ADP report also showed easing on the number of layoffs. There’s no doubt that the economy is still getting worst but the rate of getting worst is certainly much better.
